Vehicle Over Edge of Red Mountain Pass Still Not Recovered

U.S. 550 Red Mountain Pass was closed from about 10 a.m to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 18, while emergency responders attempted to retrieve a vehicle found in the Uncompahgre Gorge, about three miles south of Ouray.

No information is available on any potential victims of the crash.

Ouray County Sheriff Deputy Derrick Linnell reported that the highway will be closed again on Thursday as retrieval efforts continue.

A crane that had been positioned at the accident site on Wednesday “didn’t have the reach to extract the vehicle for the distance the vehicle was from the highway,” Linnell said. A tow truck will be substituted in tomorrow’s effort.

The car was discovered in a narrow gully near mile marker 89, just north of the Riverside Slide avalanche snowshed, with steep cliffs rising up in both directions. The highway is carved out of the cliffside about 300 feet above the bottom of the canyon where the vehicle had come to rest.

The Ouray Sheriff’s Office, which is handling the response, did not have any more information about the vehicle or potential victims on Wednesday afternoon. “We are hoping to have more information tomorrow to release,” Linnell said.
