Introducing the Mountain Independent

Dear Readers,

When we launched almost three years ago, we introduced the San Juan Independent to you with a simple vision:

We believe…
– that small towns have big stories.
– that journalism is a community service.
– that a better informed community is a better community.
– that quality beats clutter.

Our goal has always been to send you the longform, regional stories that you can’t get anywhere else.  And that goal is unchanged. But we’ve reimagined our publication over the last year to push the limits of our reporting in order to take a more comprehensive and compelling approach to providing those stories.

In an era of growing polarization, with the very institution of journalism under attack, it is more crucial than ever to break down barriers and build new connections.  So, we grew our network of journalists to include voices from Aspen, Jackson, Bozeman, Truckee, Sun Valley, Mammoth and Ogden, and we’re relaunching with a broader vision as the Mountain Independent.  We will dig deep into the environmental, economic and social similarities and difference between mountain communities to shake up old conversations with new resources.

Sorry we haven’t published anything in a long time.  We wanted to make sure we got it right.

We’ll start again next week over on

Welcome to the Mountain Independent.

With gratitude,

Alec Jacobson, Executive Director, Mountain Independent
